Taken to its logical conclusion, the dream of capitalism as a meritocracy is shown with all its warty glory in this violent but entertaining novel. Chris Faulkner attempts to find his own identity while being shoved into the meat grinder of a dysfunctional society based upon an ideal of survival of the fittest. Sadly, as with all of these concepts, what defines the fittest doesn't always meet with reality. In this England, executives are judged on their ruthlessness as drivers, road raging against each other in duels to the death for the chance at that promotion or new account.

While the idea is novel and the promise is there, some ideas just aren't fleshed out to their conclusion. In the background there is evidence to what generated both the malformed ideas of fitness as well as the way other societies reacted to the same pressures. The knife fights to determine field agents in South America, for example, are mentioned, but as a whole the concept of the world and the critique of society's maladaptive methods to justify perverse philosophies are left hanging.

Chris seems to change his a basic character without warning at times as well, going from philosophical old school chess playing samurai to a starry eyed lost boy with an ax to grind, but in a story about a man lost in a world that makes no sense, that's forgivable. The true dynamic of him wrestling with his identity isn't lost, even if, at times, his motivation is.

Also included is Morgan's generally cringe worthy sex scenes, but if you can stomach those then the story can keep you engaged enough to press on. There are always new and exciting abuses an unfair survival of the fittest world can use to tantalize. Overall I'd recommend this for fans of cyberpunk and those with a left leaning bent to their thoughts.

In a brutal dystopian future, corporations have begun making business out of global conflict. A major bout of worldwide depression has left the majority of the population trapped inside ghettoes called zones, unable to afford the now prohibitively expensive fuel costs. This has left the roads as battle grounds for executive officers jockeying for position within their company as they take advantage of global conflict to secure profit for their morally bankrupt employers. It's an interesting look at an all too plausible future, where the have-nots watch the haves kill each other for fun in road duels, while ignoring the greater plight of society falling apart around them.
I enjoyed this book for the strange (albeit totally non-realistic) look at corporate culture in the nearish future. The setting is a world similar to what is presented in the Shadowrun series with the corporate "Zek-tivs" ruling over the losers, worthless slime, and criminal dregs in the ghettos only without the magic, hackers, and voodoo flim-flam. It doesn't help that these areas, rather than having much anything worthwhile going on, are filled with either abandoned vehicles, abandoned buildings, or death; they might as well be zombie-infested warzones. In the corporate world depicted here, you must murder the competition via a registered road battle if you want a promotion or if someone wants your job or risk being burned alive in a flaming car wreck for the better of the company. This never made much sense to me because even though the company the characters work for deals in violence as some sort of foreign arms dealers or something (Conflict Investment is what it's referred to), I can't think of corporations giving out executive positions based on the sole criteria that you ran your supervisor off the road and shot him in the face. There are a lot of good dialog, action, and tense moments here, but I didn't really connect with the main character at all, likely due to the unorthodox violent tendencies, wonton drug-use, and erratic behavior. It all seemed too far-fetched that all this murder and partying on behalf of the main characters would impart a good work ethic to even keep these jobs they have. Erratic behavior is usually not a bad thing, but I ended up actually disliking every character in this book. The book ties in a lot of political stuff involving South American third world regimes at odds with each other, but it never hits home other than to give the characters something to do or talk and kill each other over. The sub-plot seems thin. Overall, I would say this was a fun read and it had a good "voice" like Richard's other books, but I still think Altered Carbon is the best work so far.
A pretty good roller-coaster ride and commentary on modern day corporate culture. As always, Morgan's storytelling and action scenes are top class. However, some of the character dynamics, for example between the protagonist Chris and his wife Carla and between Chris and his best mate Mike, are a little inconsistent. Also the inclusion of the ombudsman plot line felt forced and, ultimately, unnecessary. I see the book went through a variety of incarnations from short story to screen play and ultimately to book form, and that might explain why it lacks the depth of Morgan classics like Altered Carbon and Broken Angels. Still very much worth reading,.
