ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John Philpin is an independent criminal profiler and a retired psychologist with an international reputation as an expert on violent behavior. He has appeared on Unsolved Mysteries, America's Most Wanted, 20/20 Downtown, Inside Edition, and CBC's As It Happens, and has served as a guest commentator on Court TV's Prime Time Justice. His nonfiction works include Shattered Justice (Harper Collins), about the murder of 12-year old Stephanie Crowe; Stalemate (Bantam), about a series of child abductions and murders in the San Francisco Bay area; and Beyond Murder (Onyx/Penguin Books), investigating the Gainesville student murders. He has also written five novels including The Murder Channel and Dreams in the Key of Blue.
A recipient of numerous awards for contributions in murder investigations, Philpin's forensic work was featured in Philip E. Ginsburg's Shadow of Death, the investigation of a series of murders in Vermont and New Hampshire. Philpin holds degrees in English, clinical psychology, and forensic psychology from Harvard and Goddard College.

I loved this smart, trippy memoir of a period of time seen through a draft dodger's eyes. It explores small-stage, personal crimes (a double murder and child abduction) wrapped in world-stage atrocities and war-mongering. It's a full-steam-ahead mental romp whose true depths only reveal themselves later en route. It's hard to stop reading it. Really hard. Often, I found myself flipping back a page to re-examine something I'd read, suddenly aware of another layer.
I knew John Philpin from his forensic psychology writings and explorations of violent behavior. He was one of the first independent criminal profilers in the U.S. and known internationally for his works on cases like the murder of 12-year old Stephanie Crowe ("Shattered Justice" - now on my "to read" list.) Bad Dog comes from out of left field in some ways yet in others you feel you've been waiting for it all along. It's clearly informed by his deep psychological insights and, I feel sure, by John Philpin's own wrestling matches with society and its obsessive propensity for, love of, and long history of, shrouding truth. You emerge from reading this book feeling more alive. Can't ask for more than that.
The first 30 or so pages seem like interesting though going-nowhere poli-philosophical ranting, but stick with it There is a serious plot-line and murder mystery here. The opening sections are also, as it turns out, necessary in establishing the central character and everything else in the rest of the novel. While the number of characters can be a little confusing on first read, the writing is truly first-rate fluent, insightful, but also fluid and easy to follow. One of the best modern novels I've read in some time.
Tells a story that needs to be heard. Philpin writes masterfully with the wit and wisdom of one who has been there.
