Scotland By Starlight The sequel to A Scottish Ferry Tale Nancy Volkers 9781453840726 Books

I just finished this book. Literally. I normally don't write book reviews since they can be so subjective, but after about five seconds' reflection, I knew I had to put in my two-cents worth.

This book is brilliant! I loved Cassie, even when I wanted to strangle her for being such a putz at times (more in the previous book than this one)! I adored her sense of humor and how she could even be a bit snarky. Ralph (not a great name, but a wonderful character) made the vast majority of novel "heroes" look shallow and "verra" uninteresting to me. Even the minor characters in the story received enough "airplay" to make me care about them and their struggles, especially Jamie and Lynn. I'd love to see Ms. Volker expand the life-stories of more of the characters introduced to us in this book and in "A Scottish Ferry Tale".

A word about Ms. Volkers' style of writing: I LOVE IT! There's nothing I like better than an author who writes from the heart and doesn't try to be too windswept or too culturally-relevant. There are no overused, too-hip words or phrases (like the word "hottie", which drives me crazy!) and you won't find many of the typical "bodice-ripper" descriptions of sex. It's just easy to read and understand (mostly), everyday language of ordinary adults who are obviously of above-average intelligence. Her liberal use of humor snagged me from the very beginning of "Ferry Tale" and I found myself continuing to laugh out loud nearly all the way through to the end of this wonderful read. Once you read them both you'll get why I say "nearly" to the end. Don't want any spoilers here.

More than by the fact that I couldn't put it down, I always know that I've loved a book when I turn the last page and feel like I've just lost a best friend. This book made me feel like that in more ways than one. I highly recommend reading it and then sharing it
with your best friend.

Scotland By Starlight The sequel to A Scottish Ferry Tale Nancy Volkers 9781453840726 Books Reviews

I read a Scottish Ferry Tale and Scotland By Starlight back to back. I loved how Scotland By Starlight picked right up. It wasn't years later or anything. It's not definite how soon but it couldn't be that far off from the ending of A Scottish Ferry Tale.

I also loved the story. It's what you knew from the first should happen and probably would happen, but you needed to know it just the same. I couldn't get over Cassie's love for Ralph or his for her. I still can't get over Ralph myself. These were people I fell in love with and still love.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ SPOILER @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I hated that Cassie died. I couldn't believe it. I cried. Not just silent tears while I kept reading. I'm talking blurry eyed, had to stop reading to blow my nose and wipe my eyes, wracking sob type crying. I hurt so badly for Ralph that my stomach knotted. Books generally have a happy ending and this one didn't. That's another thing that will always make this book stick out in my mind. It was different. I liked that. I will always miss Cassie as if she were a true friend. I also wouldn't change the way the book ended.
I must say that I read the first book on a whim. Glad I did. Went straight to the second book right after. I can't say I liked the writing style so much at first. The back and forth sometimes confused me and I found myself skipping through some of the details because they just went on. But the story line was breath taking. I laughed, I smiled, and I found myself reaching for a tissue. I read the other reviews. The ending is... Unpredictable to say it nicely. There are loops and turns and an incredible story that reals you in until you are so in depth involved in the book you find yourself surprised. It is truly a great read. Pulls you in until the very last page. Not one to let the other reviews scare you away!
Great romance story continuing on from 'A Scottish Ferry Tale'. Wonderful characters that make the people of Scotland come alive and live in your heart. Beautifully written, the story is engrossing and fun, with lots of Scottish history and culture. I want to see more from Ms. Volkers' pen!
I read these two books back to back. I loved the first but read it very fast and was eagerly looking forward to the second. It did not disappoint. It's a longer story and allowed you to be more involved in the daily lives of Cassie and Ralph. I was able to take my time and savor the experience. It was wonderfully written and made me ache to return to Oban. I could easily relate to Cassie and her struggles, being from America, and could easily fall into lasting love with a man such as Ralph. A truly moving, breath-taking, emotional read. Unfortunately, the author has only these two books so I am left eagerly wondering what she will come up with next.
I first read "A Scottish Ferry Tale" and found myself totally engrossed by the characters and the story they wove.
Then I read reviews for "Scotland by Starlight" and almost didn't buy it thanks to some rather critical remarks. Having just finished the book I can without hesitation say "Just read it!". It is well written and it will tug on your heart strings. The sex seems a bit gratuitous at times but when you read that last page you will be glad you took the time and got to know the people from "A Scottish Ferry Tale" even better.
While not really a romance story reader, I picked these two books because of the Scottish titles. I wanted to see how well the (non Scots) author did with the locations and accents (being a Glasgow girl myself). I found both books surprisingly engrossing, building to a satisfying, good read. I thoroughly enjoyed both of them, the second a bit more than the first, in spite of the unforseen shock at the end. The people, places and situations all ring true, I loved the indecision of the main characters all of whom I would have loved to meet. The wedding was a corker, one you would have been delighted to attend. I had been looking forward to revisiting all of them in upcoming books [before the shocking ending. Would really look forward to another book from this enchanting pen.

Would recommend reading A Scottish Ferry Tale1st to familiarize yourself with the characters.
