My grandma and grandpa had this book when I was a child, and my cousin inherited it. I figured eventually I'd pick one up in a book store for myself, and didn't worry too much about it. However, I recently came across these reviews and felt I had to act fast, because if these crybabies get their way, who knows? The book could be censored or banned! Look what they've done to Laura Ingalls Wilder! The crybabies sound as if they think they're very smart, looking at this book for the first time through adult eyes in 2018. Calling out the murky desolation as if Dare Wright didn't know what she was doing, as if unsuspecting children will wander into the cheerful facade and be pulled under. Hint: it's called The Lonely Doll for a reason! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE DARK. As children, my cousins and I were smart enough to understand the point - this book is about feelings. Reviewers: read more, write less - the book is wonderful and your opinions are not. Special note to the whiner who complained the pictures are in black 'n' white: BWAAHHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Tags : The Lonely Doll [Dare Wright] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <DIV>Once there was a little doll. Her name was Edith. She lived in a nice house and had everything she needed except someone to play with. She was lonely! Then one morning Edith looked into the garden and there stood two bears! I am so excited they are printing these Lonely Doll books again! I have original copies from the 1960's that I passed down to my young daughter. I loved these books when I was little and she loves them too. Now I can add to our family collection.
Anyone who calls this book creepy needs an imagination. I despise parents who don't give their children credit for being smart enough to separate fantasy from reality. If you don't have a strong enough bond with your child or effective enough communication skills to discuss this book with your child, you should probably give your child up for adoption and move to the moon. Oh, no! A Teddy bear is spanking a doll! My child will be warped forever! Get over it! Your child isn't a bean brain, is she? As for the person who wants this in color, because that's how it originally came out, wrong! The original was black and white. I have a mid-century first edition. It's in black and white, and that's the artistic beauty of it. Honestly, people need to get over themselves with these reviews.
My first graders are loving this series. We talk about how things were different when these books were written. They love the scrapes Edith and Little Bear get into and there is a good lesson they can discover through discussion. This book was sent overseas and still arrived early! I got to surprise my class a day early. Thank you!
This is the very first book I ever checked out of a public library. Actually it was the bookmobile. I kept checking that same book out over and over. Finally the librarian asked me if I'd like to give someone else a chance to read it.
I was disappointed with the quality of this paperback. My daughter loves Lonely Doll, and I had been buying used copies of the original books when I see them at an affordable price. I was glad to see the series was back in print, but the pages in this reproduction are of a low-quality paper, and the photos are pixilated. I don't mind the soft cover, but I expected the book to be better made. If I buy any more of this series, I will be looking for the used hardbacks again. This is a good option if the original books can't be found.
Loved this book when it was read to be 50 years ago! Bought it for my granddaughters and read it to my two sons. Has simple lessons/stories about being kind, how to treat other people and most of all how famlies treat each other. Mr Bear takes care of little bear and Edith the doll. Very cute family!
i recently returned to this book as a grandmother and was intrigued to see how to see how it had actually influenced me after all these years. As a photographer I have long been interested in the how active objects actually are even in their " stillness" and I do remember pouring over these pages as a child and being mesmerized by that even then. And I agree...children understand most completely about the fear of lonely and the need for others. This is nothing you need to hide from them! It is a fact of life that fully informs us all as we move through life. My children and grandchildren ( pre and post Internet!) love this book and there are many good reasons for that!
