This book is almost a mystery. All along there are parts called "Today" and I was so confused. So intrigued. So curious. The story of Jess + Alex is truly epic ... It is long and the road is winding but they finally find that place. At times, Alex was an extremely frustrating person but her story and faults leads to a kind of amazing full circle.
I am glad the whole story was wrapped up in a big sweet HEA but I would have liked a wee bit more years ... But that wasn't the point of the story and I am ok with it.
There is also no actual sex scenes in this book - there is build up, the fade to black but no play by play. I would have liked just one with Jess and Alex.

The Mason List A Coming of Age Love Story eBook SD Hendrickson Reviews
Intensely emotional 20 year journey between two people from completely different walks of life but who forge a lifelong bond.
This is not a hearts and flowers story. Due to circumstances that were too much for her 8 year old mind to grasp Alexander "Alex" rages at the injustice and rages at the ones that help. The only one she lets partially in is Jess Mason. We as a reader knew these two were destined for each other when they were both 8 but Alex refused to believe she was ever good enough for his love so she kept him in the friend’s zone and broke his heart more than once over the 20 years. It was painful at times watching Alex’s self destructing behavior and how that eventually affected her “friendship” with Jess. The old saying of you don’t know what you had till it’s gone is basically Alex’s life.
There are many times you will need Kleenex reading this and also times you just want to beat Alex over the head to get over it. The ending was not a traditional ending but the epilogue which was probably another twenty years later finally left you with a happy feeling.
I will be honest with you. I was not fond of much of this book. I read the first five or six chapters and then had a hard time going back to pick it up again. It was just so depressing. I won't give away spoilers but a very sad circumstance happened, and then her situation became worse and worse, so dark and unhappy. Slowly the mood level picked up in the book but the pace was so slow. I was at fifty percent through the book when it finally stopped telling the story of when she was a child. I almost gave up on it again but forced myself to read on and I did finally read the book to the end. I think it was the last quarter of the book that changed my two star review into four stars. When the author finally did address the love story it was a beautiful thing. The Mason list turned into something uplifting and spiritual. In the end the reader believes that these two characters truly love each other and there was no one else in the world for them but each other. This story isn't inst-love, and it doesn't dwell on sex (and I really admire that.) It is a true love story that will make you believe in "Until death do us part."
This audiobook was given to me for free at my request from audiobook Boom and I provided this voluntary review.
I listened to this audiobook and have to say I was pleasantly surprised. From the title and book cover it was not at all what I expected.
First the story
In summary the story starts when Alex is a young girl, we follow her life from age 6 thru her late 20's. She has had a tough life, once her mother is diagnosed with cancer her life falls apart. She is "saved" by the Mason family and thus begins the making of a list. This list is of good deeds that the Mason family has provided for Alex, that she feels she must one day pay back. She befriends the youngest Mason, Jess, and develops a bond with him that can never be broken. The story is one of young despair, love and aspirations. It is heart wrenching at times but left me feeling emotionally full. A well developed yet complicated love story.
The audiobook was well read. I found the reading speed to be fast, but that just meant I actually had to listen to it at normal speed ;) It flowed well and was clear and articulate. I did not have to rewind or replay any part of this to understand what was said. The narrator did a nice job with the MC Alex, portraying her feelings well. The voice of Jess, was a good version of a male voice, although I did find him sounding a bit dim at times. Almost like he was not quite a smart fella. Otherwise, I flew through this book and enjoyed it 100% when reaching the end.
I went into this book blind on recommendation of a reader friend. I hadn’t read the blurb before I opened up to Chapter One. Now reading the blurb after the fact, it mentioned this is a crossover genre between Young Adult and New Adult. Being honest, I’m not really a YA fan, but I never felt while reading this that it was really YA. Yes, it starts in childhood, but the way this is written makes me feel like It was taking me back in time so I truly felt the impact of the story. It told the story of an 8 year old girl who lost her mother to cancer, and life as she knew it was destroyed. It told the story of a privileged young boy with bright blue eyes who befriended a lonely girl during her darkest days, and gave her a ray of light in an angry world. Two people who would never be expected to cross paths, yet from day one, were never meant to be apart. Years of pushing and shoving and hugging and laughing paved the way for an emotional yet epic love story.
This book was a wonderful and beautifully deep read; the kind that reaches in and grabs hold of your heart. The characters had a deep rooted history and the emotions ran deep. It didn’t take long for me to be rooting for Jess, wishing that he could just make Alex see what was staring her in the face for so many years. Eventually, I was a little irritated by the fact that no matter what happened, Alex selfishly refused to let herself give in to what she really and truly knew was right. This is really well written, but I just kind of wished that certain events would have unfolded just a bit sooner, as for me the last 20% or so felt rushed in comparison to the majority of the book, and I think I missed out on being as emotionally attached as I could have been. Definitely a fantastic story and one I would recommend though!
